Burrow

The Monster that Digs Deeper. You have been standing in the ash. You have been buried beneath the earth. You have been drifting without direction. You have been hollow.

Now it is time to look at what you have been hiding from.

There is a creature that digs constantly. It burrows deeper into the earth whenever anything approaches. It does not know it is hiding. It simply digs. Its body is shaped for retreat, not confrontation. It has never seen the surface. It does not know there is anything above the dirt. It only knows how to go down.

In a moment, you are going to go underground with this creature. You are going to feel the dirt pressing in around you. You are going to feel the urge to keep digging, keep hiding, keep going deeper.

And when you come back up, you will see something else. You will see your own avoidance. Your own hiding. Your own refusal to turn around and face what is there.

That is the gift of this story. Keep reading. Burrow is waiting.

The story of Burrow

I dig. I am always digging. The dirt is soft and dark. It swallows my body. It covers my tracks. It hides me from everything.

I do not know what I am hiding from. I do not know I am hiding. I only know the dirt. I only know the digging. I only know the deep.

Something approaches. I dig deeper. Something gets closer. I dig deeper. Something calls out. I dig deeper.

My claws scrape against the earth. They are thick and curved. They pull the dirt toward me. They push it behind me. They dig and dig and dig.

My body is long and low. It is pressed against the ground. It is shaped for retreat, not confrontation. I do not know I am shaped for retreat. I only know the pressing. I only know the deep.

The dirt falls around me. It fills the space behind me. It covers my path. It hides where I have been. I do not know I am covering my tracks. I do not know I am hiding. I only know the falling. I only know the covering.

I dig deeper. The dirt is heavier now. It presses against my back. It presses against my sides. It presses against my head. I do not know it is heavy. I do not know it is pressing. I only know the deep.

I dig deeper. The air is thinner now. It is harder to breathe. My lungs pull against the pressure. My chest expands against the dirt. I do not know I am struggling to breathe. I only know the digging.

I dig deeper. The roots reach down. They are thick and twisted. They block my path. I dig around them. I dig through them. I do not know they are roots. I only know the obstruction. I only know the going around.

I dig deeper. The stones are here. They are sharp and hard. They cut into my claws. They slow my progress. I dig around them. I push them aside. I do not know they are stones. I only know the hardness. I only know the slow.

I dig deeper. The dirt is wet now. It clings to my body. It sticks to my claws. It weighs me down. I do not know it is wet. I do not know it is clinging. I only know the heaviness.

I dig deeper. I do not know how deep I am. I do not know why I am digging. I only know the movement. I only know the deep.

Something approaches. I dig deeper. Something gets closer. I dig deeper. Something calls out. I dig deeper.

I do not know what I am avoiding. I do not know I am avoiding anything. I only know the dig. I only know the dark. I only know the dirt. Everything is deep.

I have never seen the surface. I do not know there is a surface. I do not know I am buried. I do not know I am hiding.

I only know the dirt. I only know the dig. I only know the deep.

Now that you have been underground with Burrow, you have seen something important.

It does not know it is hiding. It does not know it is avoiding. It does not know there is a surface. It only knows how to go down, down to the deep.

You are not Burrow. You can stop digging. You can turn around. You can face what you have been avoiding.

That is the gift of this story. Carry it with you.

THE TEACHING OF BURROW

This is where we stop watching the monster and start looking at ourselves.

Burrow is a creature that digs constantly. It burrows deeper into the earth whenever anything approaches. It does not know it is hiding. It simply digs. Its body is shaped for retreat, not confrontation. It has never seen the surface. It does not know there is anything above the dirt. It only knows how to go down.

It does not learn. It does not grow. It does not change. It simply exists in its nature.

Now we turn inward.

Finding the Avoidance

This is what Chamber I of The Seven Chambers calls The Soil. It is the act of finding what you have been avoiding. What you have been pretending not to know.

Burrow digs. It does not know it is hiding. It does not know it is avoiding. It only knows the movement, the going down, the retreat.

You are not Burrow. You can stop digging. You can turn around. You can face what you have been avoiding.

What are you pretending not to know? What have you been burying so deep you almost convinced yourself it is not there?

The avoidance is not protection. It is a cage. It is a wall. It is a way of staying stuck.

The Practice for This Week

This week, practice finding the avoidance.

Find a quiet moment. Sit with yourself. Do not try to fix anything. Do not try to change anything. Just observe.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What have I been pretending not to know?

  2. What have I been avoiding? What have I been burying?

  3. What would happen if I stopped digging and turned around?

  4. What is waiting for me on the surface?

You do not need to fix anything. You only need to find the avoidance.

Burrow cannot do this. But you can.

You are not a creature of retreat. You are a human being with the capacity to face what you have been avoiding.

That is the gift of The Soil. It is the ground beneath your feet. It is not comfortable. It is not perfect. But it is real. And it is where everything begins.

Each morning this week, take one minute. Ask yourself:

"What am I pretending not to know today?"

Then sit with the answer. Let it be there. Let it be real.

Burrow cannot do this. But you can.

MASTERING THIS WEEK

If this story hit you, if you recognized yourself in Burrow, then this week is for you.

You have been digging. You have been hiding. You have been burying things so deep you almost convinced yourself they are not there.

Here is how you master this week.

Step 1: Stop Digging

When you feel the urge to avoid, to distract, to bury, stop. Catch yourself. Say out loud: "I am digging right now."

Step 2: Turn Around

Ask yourself: "What am I pretending not to know?" Let the answer come.

Step 3: Look at It

Look at what you have been avoiding. Do not try to fix it. Do not try to solve it. Just look at it. Let it be there.

Step 4: Keep Returning

You will forget. You will start digging again. That is normal. When you notice, stop. Turn around. Look again.

That is the practice. That is how you stop hiding. That is how you stop burying. That is how you face what needs to be faced.

You are not Burrow. You can stop digging. You can turn around. You can begin here.

Next Week

Echo is waiting. A creature that repeats whatever it hears. It does not understand the sounds. It does not question them. It simply repeats.

Next week, we will meet this creature. A monster that has no voice of its own.

We are still in The Soil. We are still learning to see where we are standing.

Until then, stop digging. Turn around. You are not Burrow. You can face what is there. You can begin here.

Now that you have been underground with Burrow, you have a choice.

You can close this email and forget it. Or you can sit with it. You can ask yourself the hard questions. You can find what you have been avoiding.

If you want to go deeper, The Seven Chambers is waiting for you on Ko-fi. It contains the full journey.

But even if you do not buy the guide, take this one truth with you:

You are not Burrow. You can stop digging. You can turn around. You can face what is there. You can begin here.

See you next week.
