Gaze

The Monster That Watches Everyone Else.

You have stepped out of the shadows. You have seen the pattern you keep repeating. You have begun to see yourself.

Now it is time to look at where you have been looking.

There is a creature that stares at others but never looks at itself. It has no reflection. It does not know it is unseen. It only watches. It focuses on everyone else. It sees their flaws. It sees their failures. It sees their patterns. It never looks inward.

In a moment, you are going to watch with this creature. You are going to see what it sees. You are going to feel what it feels to look outward and never inward.

And when you come back, you will see something else. You will see your own gaze. Your own focus on others. Your own avoidance of yourself.

That is the gift of this story. Keep reading. Gaze is waiting.

The Story of Gaze

I watch.

I have always watched. It is what I know. It is what I do. It is what I am.

I watch the creatures around me. I see their movements. I see their choices. I see their mistakes. I see everything they do.

I see the one who repeats the same pattern. I see the one who cannot let go. I see the one who hides. I see the one who runs. I see the one who builds the same trap over and over.

I see them all. I know them all. I understand them all.

I do not see myself.

I look at the creature who is stuck. I think: "They should move." I look at the creature who is avoiding. I think: "They should face it." I look at the creature who is repeating. I think: "They should stop."

I see their patterns clearly. I see their traps. I see their cages. I see everything they cannot see.

I do not see my own.

I have no reflection. I have never seen myself. I do not know what I look like. I do not know what I do. I do not know what patterns I repeat.

I only know what I see in others.

I watch the creatures. They stumble. They fall. They get back up. They stumble again. I see it all. I understand it all.

I do not understand myself.

I think about them. I analyze them. I judge them. I do not think about myself. I do not analyze myself. I do not judge myself.

I am too busy watching.

I see the one who is avoiding. I do not see that I am avoiding. I see the one who is hiding. I do not see that I am hiding. I see the one who is stuck. I do not see that I am stuck.

I only see them.

I have been watching for so long. I do not remember when I started. I do not remember why. I only know the watching. I only know the seeing. I only know the outward gaze.

I do not look inward. I do not know how. I do not know there is anything to see.

I watch.

I watch.

I watch.

I do not see myself.

Now that you have watched with Gaze, you have seen something important.

It sees everyone else. It understands everyone else. It judges everyone else. But it never looks at itself. It has no reflection. It does not know it is unseen.

You are not Gaze. You can turn your gaze inward. You can see yourself. You can face what you have been avoiding.

That is the gift of this story. Carry it with you.

The Teaching

This is where we stop watching the monster and start looking at ourselves.

Gaze is a creature that stares at others but never looks at itself. It has no reflection. It does not know it is unseen. It only watches. It focuses on everyone else. It sees their flaws. It sees their failures. It sees their patterns. It never looks inward.

It does not learn. It does not grow. It does not change. It simply exists in its nature.

Now we turn inward.

Participation in Your Own Stagnation

This is what Chamber II of The Seven Chambers calls The Mirror. It is the act of seeing your own participation. Noticing how you keep yourself stuck. Recognizing that you are not a victim of your life. You are a participant.

Gaze looks outward. It sees everyone else. It never looks inward. It never sees itself. It never sees its own participation in its own stagnation.

You are not Gaze. You can look inward. You can see yourself. You can see your own participation.

What are you avoiding by focusing on others? What are you not seeing about yourself because you are too busy watching everyone else?

You are not a victim. You are a participant. You are choosing, every day, to stay stuck. Once you see that, you can choose differently.

The Practice This Week

This week, practice turning your gaze inward.

Find a quiet moment. Sit with yourself. Do not try to fix anything. Do not try to change anything. Just observe.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What am I avoiding by focusing on others?

  2. Where am I participating in my own stagnation?

  3. What would I see if I looked at myself the way I look at others?

  4. What am I afraid I will find?

You do not need to fix anything. You only need to look.

Gaze cannot do this. But you can.

You are not a watcher. You are a human being with the capacity to look inward and see yourself clearly.

That is the gift of The Mirror. It is the reflection in front of you. It is not comfortable. It is not easy. But it is real. And it is where everything deepens.

Each morning this week, take one minute. Ask yourself:

"What am I avoiding by looking at everyone else?"

Then sit with the answer. Let it be there. Let it be real.

Gaze cannot do this. But you can

Mastering This Week

If this story hit you, if you recognized yourself in Gaze, then this week is for you.

You have been watching everyone else. You have been seeing their patterns. You have been judging their choices. You have been avoiding yourself.

Here is how you master this week.

Step 1: Catch Yourself

When you notice yourself focusing on someone else's flaws, their choices, their patterns, stop. Catch yourself. Say out loud: "I am looking outward right now."

Step 2: Turn It Around

Ask yourself: "What does this mirror in me?" Whatever you see in them, ask if it is true for you too.

Step 3: Look at Yourself

Do what you have been avoiding. Look at your own patterns. Look at your own choices. Look at your own participation.

Step 4: Keep Turning

You will look outward again. That is normal. When you notice, turn back. Keep looking inward. Keep facing yourself.

That is the practice. That is how you stop watching everyone else and start seeing yourself.

You are not Gaze. You can look inward. You can see yourself. You can face what you have been avoiding. You can begin here.

Next week

Mask is waiting. A creature with no face of its own. It wears whatever shape it needs to survive. It performs. It adapts. It hides.

Next week, we will meet this creature. A monster that has been showing the world a version of itself that is not real.

We are still in The Mirror. We are still learning to face what we have been avoiding.

Until then, turn your gaze inward. Look at yourself. You are not Gaze. You can see yourself clearly. You can begin here.

Now that you have watched with Gaze, you have a choice.

You can close this email and forget it. Or you can sit with it. You can ask yourself the hard questions. You can turn your gaze inward.

But even if you do nothing else, take this one truth with you:

You are not Gaze. You can look inward. You can see yourself. You can begin here.

See you next week.
