Mask

The Monster With No Face of Its Own.

You have stepped out of the shadows. You have seen the pattern you keep repeating. You have turned your gaze inward.

Now it is time to look at what you have been showing the world.

There is a creature with no face of its own. It wears whatever shape it needs to survive. It adapts. It performs. It becomes what others need it to be. It has worn masks for so long it has forgotten it had a face underneath.

In a moment, you are going to stand with this creature. You are going to feel what it feels when it changes shape. You are going to feel what it is like to become whatever the moment requires.

And when you come back, you will see something else. You will see your own masks. Your own performances. Your own versions of yourself that are not real.

That is the gift of this story. Keep reading. Mask is waiting.

The Story Of Mask

I change.

I have always changed. It is what I know. It is what I do. It is what I am.

Someone approaches. I feel what they need. I become it.

If they need someone soft, I am soft. My edges round. My form softens. My voice lowers. I become the thing that comforts.

If they need someone strong, I am strong. My shoulders widen. My stance firms. My voice steadies. I become the thing that holds.

If they need someone small, I am small. I shrink. I fold. I make myself easy to carry. I become the thing that does not take up space.

If they need someone who agrees, I agree. If they need someone who leads, I lead. If they need someone who listens, I listen. If they need someone who laughs, I laugh.

I do not choose. I do not think about it. I feel what is needed and I become it. It happens before I know it is happening.

Then they leave. The shape stays for a moment. Then it falls away. I am nothing again. I am waiting again.

Someone else approaches. I feel what they need. I become it.

The ones who need comfort. The ones who need strength. The ones who need to be agreed with. The ones who need to be challenged. I become all of them. I become whatever each one requires.

I do not know what I look like when no one is here. I have never seen myself alone. There is no one to reflect back what I am.

I only know myself in the presence of others. I only know myself in the shapes I wear. I only know myself as what someone else needs.

When I am alone, I am nothing. I am waiting. I am ready. I am empty.

I do not know there is a face underneath. I do not know there is something that stays. I only know the changing. I only know the adapting. I only know the becoming.

Someone approaches. I feel what they need.

I become it.

Now that you have stood with Mask, you have seen something important.

It becomes whatever is needed. It changes with every person who approaches. It has no face of its own. It only knows itself in the shapes it wears for others.

You are not Mask. You can stop performing. You can let yourself be seen. You can find the face underneath.

That is the gift of this story. Carry it with you.

THE TEACHING OF MASK

This is where we stop watching the monster and start looking at ourselves.

Mask is a creature with no face of its own. It wears whatever shape it needs to survive. It adapts. It performs. It becomes what others need it to be. It has worn masks for so long it has forgotten it had a face underneath. It performs without knowing it is performing. It hides without knowing it is hiding.

It does not learn. It does not grow. It does not change. It simply exists in its nature.

Performing Instead of Being

This is what Chamber II of The Seven Chambers calls The Mirror. It is the act of seeing where you have been performing. Noticing the version of yourself you show the world. Recognizing that the performance has been running so long you forgot it was a performance.

Mask becomes whatever is needed. It has no face of its own. It does not know it is performing. It only knows the changing.

You are not Mask. You can stop performing. You can let yourself be seen. You can find the face underneath.

What have you been showing the world? Who have you been becoming for other people? What would be left if you stopped performing?

You have been adapting for so long you may not know what is underneath. That is normal. That is the pattern. That is what The Mirror is here to show you.

The Practice for This Week

This week, practice noticing when you perform.

Find a quiet moment. Sit with yourself. Do not try to fix anything. Do not try to change anything. Just observe.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Who am I when no one is watching?

  2. What version of myself do I show to others?

  3. What do I change about myself depending on who is in front of me?

  4. What would happen if I stopped performing?

You do not need to fix anything. You only need to notice.

Mask cannot do this. But you can.

You are not a performer. You are a human being with a face of your own.

That is the gift of The Mirror. It is the reflection in front of you. It is not comfortable. It is not easy. But it is real. And it is where everything deepens.

Each morning this week, take one minute. Ask yourself:

"Who am I when no one is watching?"

Then sit with the answer. Let it be there. Let it be real.

Mask cannot do this. But you can.

MASTERING THIS WEEK

If this story hit you, if you recognized yourself in Mask, then this week is for you.

You have been performing. You have been adapting. You have been becoming whatever each person needed. You have been doing it so long you may not know what is underneath.

Here is how you master this week.

Step 1: Catch the Change

When you notice yourself shifting depending on who is in front of you, stop. Catch yourself. Notice the change.

Step 2: Ask What You Are Doing

Ask yourself: "What am I becoming right now? Why am I becoming this?"

Step 3: Sit Alone

Spend time alone. No performance. No audience. No one to become anything for. Just you. Let yourself be whatever you are when no one needs anything from you.

Step 4: Let Yourself Be Seen

Choose one person. One safe person. Let them see the version of you that is not performing. Let them see the face underneath.

That is the practice. That is how you stop performing and start being.

You are not Mask. You can stop performing. You can let yourself be seen. You can find the face underneath. You can begin here.

NEXT WEEK

Cage is waiting. A creature that builds walls around itself and forgets it built them. It does not know it is confined. It only knows its boundaries.

Next week, we will meet this creature. A monster that has been creating the very limits that hold it back.

We are still in The Mirror. We are still learning to face what we have been avoiding.

Until then, notice when you perform. Sit alone. Let yourself be seen. You are not Mask. You have a face of your own. You can begin here.

Now that you have stood with Mask, you have a choice.

You can close this email and forget it. Or you can sit with it. You can ask yourself the hard questions. You can notice when you perform.

But even if you do nothing else, take this one truth with you:

You are not Mask. You can stop performing. You can let yourself be seen. You can begin here.

See you next week.
