You have completed The Soil. Eight weeks. Eight monsters. Eight teachings.
You have looked at where you are standing. You have seen what you have been holding. You have faced what you have been avoiding. You have named what is present. You have separated truth from noise. You have told yourself the truth. You have let it be enough.
Now the work deepens.
The Soil was the foundation. The Mirror is the reflection.
There is a creature that exists only in the edge of light. It never steps fully into view. It does not know it is hiding. It simply stays where it cannot be seen. It watches from the shadows. It observes without participating. It is always there, just out of sight.
In a moment, you are going to stand at the edge of the light with this creature. You are going to feel the comfort of the dark. You are going to feel what it is like to watch without being seen.
And when you come back, you will see something else. You will see your own hiding. Your own avoidance. Your own refusal to step into the light.
That is the gift of this story. Keep reading. Shade is waiting.
The Story Of Shade
I am at the edge.
I am always at the edge. I do not step forward. I do not step back. I stay here. Where the light ends and the dark begins.
I can see everything from here. I can see the light. I can see what is in it. I can see the creatures that walk through it. I can see their faces. I can see their movements. I can see everything.
They do not see me. They do not know I am here. I am just outside their vision. I am just beyond their reach. I am here. They do not know.
I watch. I observe. I do not participate.
I see the creatures in the light. They stumble. They fall. They get back up. They make mistakes. They learn. They grow. They change. I see it all.
I do not step into the light. I do not join them. I stay here. At the edge.
I do not know why I stay here. I do not know there is a reason. I only know the edge. I only know the watching. I only know the dark.
The light is warm. I can feel it from here. It touches the edge of my form. It reaches for me. It invites me in.
I do not move.
The dark is comfortable. The dark is known. The dark is where I have always been. I do not know anything else. I do not know there is anything else.
I watch the creatures in the light. They do not know I am here. They do not know I am watching. They do not know I exist.
I could step forward. I could let the light touch all of me. I could be seen. I could be known. I could participate.
I do not move.
I stay at the edge. I watch. I observe. I hide.
I do not know I am hiding. I do not know I am avoiding. I only know the edge. I only know the watching. I only know the dark.
The light is still there. It has always been there. It will always be there. It reaches for me. It waits for me.
I do not move.
I stay at the edge.
I watch.
I hide.
Now that you have stood at the edge with Shade, you have seen something important.
It never steps into the light. It never lets itself be seen. It watches from the shadows. It observes without participating. It does not know it is hiding. It only knows the comfort of the dark.
You are not Shade. You can step into the light. You can let yourself be seen. You can face what you have been avoiding.
That is the gift of this story. Carry it with you.
The Teaching
This is where we stop watching the monster and start looking at ourselves.
Shade is a creature that exists only in the edge of light. It never steps fully into view. It does not know it is hiding. It simply stays where it cannot be seen. It watches from the shadows. It observes without participating. It is always there, just out of sight. It does not know it is avoiding the light. It only knows the comfort of the dark.
It does not learn. It does not grow. It does not change. It simply exists in its nature.
Now we turn inward.
Facing What You Avoid
This is what Chamber II of The Seven Chambers calls The Mirror. It is the act of facing what you have been avoiding. Looking at what you have been looking away from.
Shade stays in the shadows. It watches but does not participate. It sees but does not step forward. It knows the light is there but refuses to enter it.
You are not Shade. You can step into the light. You can face what you have been avoiding. You can look at what you have been looking away from.
What have you been avoiding? What have you been refusing to see? What is right in front of you that you have been pretending is not there?
The avoidance is not protection. It is a cage. It is a wall. It is a way of staying stuck.
You must step out of the shadows. You must face what you have been avoiding. You must look at it directly.
The Practice This Week
This week, practice facing what you avoid.
Find a quiet moment. Sit with yourself. Do not try to fix anything. Do not try to change anything. Just observe.
Ask yourself these questions:
What have I been looking away from?
What have I been pretending not to see?
What would happen if I turned and looked directly at it?
What is scarier: the truth or continuing to avoid it?
You do not need to fix anything. You only need to look.
Shade cannot do this. But you can.
You are not a creature of the shadows. You are a human being with the capacity to face what you have been avoiding.
That is the gift of The Mirror. It is the reflection in front of you. It is not comfortable. It is not easy. But it is real. And it is where everything deepens.
Each morning this week, take one minute. Ask yourself:
"What am I looking away from today?"
Then sit with the answer. Let it be there. Let it be real.
Shade cannot do this. But you can.
Mastering This Week
If this story hit you, if you recognized yourself in Shade, then this week is for you.
You have been hiding. You have been looking away. You have been avoiding the light.
Here is how you master this week.
Step 1: Name What You Are Avoiding
Write down one thing you have been looking away from. Just one thing. Be honest.
Step 2: Turn Toward It
Do not try to fix it. Do not try to solve it. Just turn toward it. Look at it.
Step 3: Sit With It
Sit with what you see. Let it be there. Do not run. Do not distract. Do not turn away.
Step 4: Keep Looking
You will want to look away again. That is normal. When you notice, turn back. Keep looking. Keep facing. Keep seeing.
That is the practice. That is how you step out of the shadows.
You are not Shade. You can look. You can see. You can face what is there. You can begin here.
Next Week
Snare is waiting. A creature that builds traps for others but never notices it is also trapped. It is caught in its own patterns. It is caught in its own designs.
Next week, we will meet this creature. A monster that keeps ending up in the same situations.
We are now in The Mirror. We are learning to face what we have been avoiding.
Until then, step out of the shadows. Turn toward what you have been looking away from. You are not Shade. You can look. You can see. You can begin here.
Now that you have stood at the edge with Shade, you have a choice.
You can close this email and forget it. Or you can sit with it. You can ask yourself the hard questions. You can face what you have been avoiding.
You are not Shade. You can look. You can see. You can face what is there. You can begin here.
See you next week.
